Honour killing is not confined to the backwoods of Indian Villages, nor they are confined to Asia,Honour killing has been prevalent since time immortal in Muslims, Christians , Rajputs and other communities also.It takes place in a somewhat twisted belief that the the honour of the family, clan or community can be defended if the person who brings dishounour is killed. The more brutal the murder the more strong the message which goes out to the whole community.
The latest shocking incident which has come to light is trying to kill the lover of a married Muslim woman in a very brutal manner. On 2nd July this 24 year old Danish man of Asian origin was attacked by the relatives of his lover who is married. He had shifted to a room in Leytonstone to be near her.
He was attacked with sulphuric acid and had it poured down his throat,it blinded him, left his tongue destroyed and he had 90% burns. He was stabbed twice in the back and also hit by bricks. He is very critical and there are very less chances of his survival.
The attack was allegedly carried out on the behest of very orthodox and deeply religious relatives of the woman they feared of being shamed in the community. The police is now in a quandary because they know that the woman’s life is in grave danger and are giving her protection. They have arrested two persons and interrogating them.
Community Leader Imtiaz kadir of the Active Change Foundation admits that Honour killing is prevelant in Pakistani Community. But they are trying to educate the people. But in the same breath he clarifies that though it is a cultural thing back home, this is not exclisive perrogative of Muslims other religions also have these honour killings.
