Before anyone jumps in to accuse me of being a feminist as many have done before just hear me out.Previously I was one of the anti reservation brigade, the present SC/ST reservation scenario is not actually appealing. The creamy layer and the already haves are taking full advantage while the have-nots are still in the miserable, pitiable conditions with no succour in sight.
I was and am of the feeling that women are multifaceted human beings, they are intelligent just look at the results which come out each year every time it is the girls who are the top scorers.They are able to manage in every field given proper chance.Of course there are exceptions are there not everywhere?
So, I was of the opinion that when we are able to do everything why we need reservation. We have got the necessary talent to move forward without using the crutches of Womens’ reservation.
That was before I started teaching the children of the lesser privileged section.There I realised that even though the daughters of the maids,and others like them are intelligent, in fact I founf that all girls were doing well in their studies while the boys despite having the privileges like studying in English medium,having all the books, best stationery they could afford were lagging behind.
The worst part being that even the most intelligent girl was supposed to help her mother in her work and also look after the house in her absence.The boys were pushed to go to school reluctantly while the girls were pulled back.Their accomplishments were always ignored or downplayed.
When these girls will grow up they actually need reservation for their betterment,to imrove their lot.Than no policemen will be calling any woman to their police station and gangraping her.
If women reservation means improving the lot of such women I for one is all for it. Just bring it on as early as possible

We have got the necessary talent but male dominance in the politics will not come to an end so easily. It is very urgent to promote the women participation in politics. Women's reservation bill is a right step in this direction.

Proposed Women’s Reservation In Parliament Is Unconstitutional!
The Background: The Indian constitution was enacted on 26th of November, 1949. It is the supreme law of the land. It lays down the framework defining fundamental political principles, establishing the structure, procedures, powers and duties, of the government and spells out the fundamental rights, directive principles and duties of citizens. The constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950 and it guarantees among other things, equality before law and equality of opportunities through article 14 and 15, respectively.
The Constitution provides for a Parliamentary form of government which is federal in structure with certain unitary features. The constitutional head of the Executive of the Union is the President. As per Article 79 of the Constitution of India, the council of the Parliament of the Union consists of the President and two Houses to be known as the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) and the House of the People (Lok Sabha). Article 74(1) of the Constitution provides that there shall be a Council of Ministers with a Prime Minister as its head to aid and advise the President, who shall exercise his functions in accordance to the advice. The real executive power is thus vested in the Council of Ministers with the Prime Minister as its head.
The Council of Ministers is collectively responsible to the House of the People (Lok Sabha). Every State has a Legislative Assembly. Certain States have an upper House called State Legislative Council. Governor is the Head of a State. There shall be a Governor for each State and the executive power of the State shall be vested in him. The council of Ministers with the Chief Minister as its head advises the Governor in the discharge of the executive functions. The Council of the Ministers of a state is collectively responsible to the Legislative Assembly of the State.
Reservation for women: A demand was made by women’s groups for 33.3% reservation for women on the ground that their representation was low in parliament and state assemblies. The bill to reserve 33.3% of seats for women in legislative bodies was first drafted by the H D Deve Gowda-led United Front government. The Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha [Lower house of Indian parliament]on September 12, 1996. Though it has been introduced in Parliament several times since then, the Bill could not be passed because of lack of political consensus.
What does the Bill provide?
Reservation for women at each level of legislative decision-making, starting with the Lok Sabha, down to state and local legislatures. If the Bill is passed, one-third of the total available seats would be reserved for women in national, state, or local governments. In continuation of the existing provisions already mandating reservations for scheduled caste and scheduled tribes, one-third of such SC and ST candidates must be women.
Failure of the 4th estate:
It is very sad and unfortunate that the Indian media has been taking the side and promoting the concept of reservation for women without ever, for once, showing the negative side of such a concept. By presenting news in such a way as though there were no negatives and that people have already accepted it, it has not been doing justice to the noble profession of journalism. In effect, the media has becoming a platform for one-sided, biased propaganda of certain vested interests and women’s lobbies without taking into consideration the rights and views of men and women who don’t support reservation and this discriminatory concept of “Robbing Peter To Pay Paul”. This bill is short-sighted, unconstitutional, undemocratic, and discriminatory. The following points are worth considering:
1. This Bill takes away the democratic right of 33% of the electorate (22 crore people) to elect their representatives. It restricts the choice of both men and women in those constituencies. The state has no right to limit the pool of representatives available to the public to choose from. This is against all democratic principles of free choice.
2. This takes away the democratic right of about 11 crore men to contest in elections, thus imparting a severe blow to the health of democracy in India . This is against the fundamental rights of 11 Crore men. It violates the right to equality guaranteed in the constitution.
3. It will lead to significant upheavals and instability in Indian polity, with MPs being forced to shuffle constituencies in almost every election. This would lead to an inability to nurture their constituency and further reduce accountability.
4. There are no measures to make sure that the benefits are received by the socially backward and underprivileged women, who really need them. There are no objective criteria to prevent the elite class or “creamy layer” of women from taking undue and unfair advantage of this legislation.
5. This Bill sacrifices merit and experience of seasoned law makers and will further divide the country on gender lines.
6. This bill suggests a rotation system which would be determined by draw of lots, in such a manner that a seat would be reserved only once in a block of three general elections. This is a serious flaw, insofar as it mechanically provides for entry of women members to fill one-third of vacancies in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas. This subverts the democratic process which is all about free choice vis-à-vis a mechanical action/ process.
7. The representation system in parliament and state legislatures is for entire constituencies which include every single person, be they man, woman or child and not just one section of the population within a constituency. In other words, an MP or an MLA is a public servant who represents a constituency and not any group/ section/ portion of his/ her constituency. He/ she is supposed to protect the interests of all in his/ her constituency and not just a particular group/ section/ portion in his or her constituency. This bill is against this concept of representation. The bill implies representation of women.
8. India is a vast country and is multi-cultural, multi-ethic, multi-lingual and with several groups, castes, sub-castes etc. The implementation of this bill would lead to more demands from various groups and sections of society for similar representation and it would be an open invitation for politicization of the representative form of Indian democracy. It will be a death blow to representation through constituencies.
9. The concept of reservation is an insult to women and their capability. This law perpetuates gender discrimination.
Rather than taking a judicious and considered approach towards the issue, which normally expected during the legislative process, the current Bill builds on gender stereotypes and makes several deeply flawed assumptions such as:
1. Women only vote for other women – More than 50% of the women exercised their franchise in the General Election of 2004 and elected their representatives, both men and women.
2. Forcing more women on the electorate is women empowerment – Forcing more women in the parliament through undemocratic means will only serve to undermine the legitimacy and efficacy of the elected women representatives.
3. All women are under-privileged - A gross generalization is made that all women are under-privileged, deprived and discriminated. That women are a homogenous group and there are no differences in terms of social status, education, etc. and hence, an across the board reservation system is needed.
4. All men are privileged - Similarly, a gross generalization is made that men are a homogenous group and are all privileged and have a natural advantage over women.
5. Women are advantaged - Assumption is made that women have no natural advantages over men. That society discriminates only women and not men. It does not recognize the natural and societal advantages that women have got in terms of moral superiority, greater faith and sympathy.
6. Reservation is indispensable - The bill does not recognize the fact that there have been many women who made it to high public offices and there have been many women Chief Ministers and a Prime Minister. Right now, we have a woman President. They all assumed office through their own efforts and without any reservation. The bill is based on the false assumption that women need reservation to enter high public offices.
The Conclusion:
It is very essential that facts are published in an unbiased manner and alternative views are considered by the media and the society. As the saying goes, “Robbing Peter to pay Paul”, is no solution - short term or long term for any perceived problem. Affirmative action creates a new set of problems than solving the existing problem.

Men Are Oppressed Too!

The oppression of men is an extremely complex phenomenon to understand. It has always been hidden, disguised, indirect, Innumerous, severe, carefully conspired and going on for thousands of years. Above all, it’s carefully and forcibly unacknowledged.
Today, it would be seen as ’startling’ and ‘unbelievable’ at the best and outright ‘ridiculous’ and ’scandalous’ at the worst to talk about man’s oppression. It’s not easy to see even the misery and pain of men, even when it is extreme.
It is so well hidden not only from the world but from the man himself. It’s just not acknowledged. No place for it in the society. No value for a man’s tears. Tears are ‘feminine’. The mechanisms of man’s oppression are just as invisible as his tears.
Once you are sensitized and you learn to look beyond what is ‘obvious’ and you slowly start witnessing it all. The first things that point to the size and nature of these invisible mechanisms are the extraordinary and intense pressures that the society (or rather a section of it) exerts to sustain or strengthen the mechanisms.
The masculinity with which boys are born, is natural masculinity. This is given by nature. However, society has created a mechanism whereby it does not acknowledge this natural masculinity. It has instead created its own version, which we shall call ’social masculinity’.
Social masculinity is not naturally endowed, but has to be granted by society. Society does not accept a person as a ‘man’ unless he fulfills certain preconditions of roles or expectations of society, referred to as ‘male gender and sexual roles’, or ’social masculinity roles.
A person is not considered a man without social manhood. This social mechanism is designed to control male behavior, especially male sexual behavior. The result is silent severe oppression of men.
Some of the “Social Masculinity” Roles are:
1. Men don’t have any emotions. They should suppress their emotions and problems.
2. They are rough and tough and should NOT complain about women.
3. Men are expected to be physically tall, strong, and brave.
4. They are supposed to protect and provide women.
5. They are supposed to make sacrifices, even sacrificing their lives, to protect and provide women.
6. They are not supposed to have weaknesses or vulnerabilities. They must not show feelings as these would make them appear weak or vulnerable.
7. They should always be willing to fight their way and defend their families. They should not return from a fight.
8. They should not have any feelings.
The result is that men are far more prone to heart attacks and stroke. Their life expectancy is some 5-6 years less than women, worldwide. Similarly, the social construct of manhood makes them NOT to complain about women, even if their women are causing them grievous hurt!
Women’s education is subsidized and a lot of support systems exist for them to open shop. While men are paying 82% of taxes in India and are denied any kind of support systems. Yet, it is men who are supposed to provide for women. Every year, 3 times more men commit suicide than women and yet there are no support systems or even laws to protect men.
All this is happening in a society that claims to have dumped the earlier traditional roles and concepts of gender and has women working in all fields and having more constitutional rights than men!
It is high time that men are liberated from their traditional roles and their masculinity is redefined based in natural masculinity and NOT with the kind of contradictions stated above. Men have always been considered as disposable and have been taken for granted.
It is high time men understand that are NOT privileged and have been suppressed too!

The years of discrimination that women faced was not a wild dream but a reality. A reality that occured because of the stupidity of the women prior to those generation. Yes, there were many feminazis like you in earlier times too who paved the way for discrimination of women. Nobody speaks about why women were discriminated. Yes, Rohan blames women for every evil visited on humanity. as we can see he believes that women deserve every horror visited upon then for their sheer stupidity. (sounds like a very religious man to me.)
The reality is that women have always been subjugated by men simply for the fact that men are larger and stronger and ruled women with their fists, everyone knows that.

Let me see ,male politicians and dictators have screwed the world up to what we see today
However woman get into politics or offices of importance it will help water down male testosterone that punches first and only talks when he feels pain ,where woman’s first instinct is to hugh and verbally solve problems ,but maybe squeeze a little hard

A total of 51 women are in the 545-member Lok Sabha while 280 are women among 4,120 legislators across all state assemblies.
The survey shows that 83 percent women legislators have criminal records in Kerala, while the figure is 25 percent for Bihar and Chhattisgarh.
The other states that have women MLAs with criminal records are Madhya Pradesh (22 percent), Karnataka (20 percent), Tamil Nadu (19 percent), Haryana and Orissa (18 percent), Maharashtra and Punjab (17 percent), Uttar Pradesh (13 percent), Andhra Pradesh (eight percent) and West Bengal (six percent).

When did I ever mention that I endrose reservation.In fact what I have said is that there should be no reservation because of the present status and furthermore it had made my life hell when I was working.Imagine despite having all the necessary qualification we of general category were always sidelined and had to suffer our juniors becoming our bosses who could not do a single work properly and to be told quite balantly that we would have to complete the leftover work properly.Pretty demeaning.

I had been reading Rohan D’s posts and comments here with great interest. I would like to pick up a few extremely valid points that he has arisen here.
Completely agree. The media have far realized that to survive and make profit, cater to the tastes of the womenfolk in the households. The ’saas-bahu’ serials not only changed the way what television serials are made these days, but also how ’news’ is disseminated by the tabloid-type so called news channels (almost 100 percent of the Hindi ’news’ channels and 90 percent of the vernacular ’news’ channels).
This is a dangerous trend for the society as it is slowly giving in to the rabid feminists and ’women welfare activists’.
Sadly, whatever credibility is left about the Fourth Estate lies with a few old broadsheets.

When it comes to women-centric laws and policies, in the absence of a male vote-bank, the women’s interest alone is protected. Same with women’s reservation bill.

I truly did not realize that so much hatred could be aimed at one’s mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers just because they were unfortunate enough to be born female.

Daughters inherit the same as sons, so there is no reason help one and not the other. Most men are very involved in their children’s lives, from changing diapers, to driving them to school, to helping fix the plumbing after the kid is married. Newspapers never write stories about this, they only write about the bad ones.
There are many truly good men out there and they have the compassion and security in their manhood not to be threatened by the advancement of women. It will be the same there with a little time and patience.

Its surprising finally to meet someone who share my views so completely even though she is so many miles away.I do have spent some really tormented moments thinking of the injustice that is being done to women everyday n no one,not the politicians,the police,the common people are bothered in the least.The politicians or the so called great people of our country give big speeches come woman’s day on how much our country has done as far as women’s empowerment is concerned.Trust me all this just a farce.I dont know whether u have heard of the mangalore pub incident,well then its needless to say that our country has got the sickest attitude towards women.I saw an interview of a mangalore pub victim who said that the Ram Sena members in the name of evacuating the pub molested then ,tugged at their skirts n pulled them by their hair.Infact some political parties undercover promote female foeticide.I have read stories the leadrs of the religious parties the sadhus or the priests the supposed Mahatmas who have sexually assaulted women staying in their ashram or unsuspecting devotees.The stories of foreigners getting sexually assaulted by their guides,drivers even roomattendants is not uncommon n the reason the people offer r absolutely annoying-inappropriate dressing.HAH!What an excuse for commiting such a heinous crime as if girls who are properly dressed donot get raped or molested.Most of the men in our country r literally mentally unhealthy.For them its just a few moments of fun toying with a girl’s body as if she is nothing but a sex object but to that girl no need to say probably its probably worse than death.N the most frustrating part is that these devils slip through the clutches of the law easily without any punishment,they get bail.It sets my head on fire to see such injustice,even if justice b done the experience she goes through is irreversible,nothing can erase those scars.In many cases women who go to the police station to launch a complaint are turned down by the police themselves n in many cases it is seen that the police themselves r the offenders.If the upholders of law turn out to be its abusers who will the girls turn to for justice???Even more difficult to bear r the stories of little girls being sexually assaulted n the number of such cases r on the rise.I shudder to think what endurable pain the little one must have gone through.Stories of 3yr olds,5yr olds,preteen girls assaulted by their neighbours even family members n teachers appear almost everyday in the newspapers.These girls’ life wrecked for ever n to that man its just a few minutes of pleasure.In most cases these girls are killed b the rapists to hide evidence of their dirty work.Even if they were alive I doubt whether they will be able to give any witness so these guys escape without any form of punishment.It runs shivers down my spine that such psychopaths r running free in the society no one knows who their next victim will be.It could be me,it could be afriend of mine,my cousin.The girls here generally avoid going in the dark considering it unsafe but I doubt whether daylight can act much as a protector.If they r counting on the local people to come forward for help they r definitely wrong.I read a story a few days ago in Times of India about a girl being dragged to a train in front of aplatform full of people n nonone came forward to interfere.Last year there was a story of how a model was molested in full public view by a mob n the crowd stood there as mere spectators.Many girls have to be out in the dark for tutions,evening colleges,jobs that is unavoidable we simply cant sit at home in fear.It is the duty of the politicians,the police to ensure safety for the girls on the roads but as I said before inspite of being the authority they are hardly reliable.When last year a girl was dragged out of her car n murdered while she was returning from her job late in the evening Sheila Dikshit told the media that it was her fault that she was out in the dark.Delhi the capital city of our country is the largest cauldron of crime n the police have so far been unable to reduce the esalating crime rate.Seeing all this I cant help feelinf quite hopeless about the condition of women here.I feel the only way out is to educate these men to see women as individuals with a heart and a mind not just a beautiful plaything.But I really dont know how that can be done coz its not just a few men that I am talking about changing but its a billion people with such mentality ingrained in them through generations.N the next step should be strict implementation of laws n lifesentence for such crimes because for the girl who survives such a nightmarish experience it is a lifelong experience of trauma.

Equality is not one-sided. It is both ways. Women cannot ask for exclusive rights over men in an equal society. Women cannot appropriate the advantages of tradition and modernity. There is no proof that the male species would become extinct. I read about it. there is another theory that the male species would become weaker but would come back! Even if we assume it to be true, it cannot happen in 100 more generations. We do not even know if humanity would exist after 50 years given the threat of nuclear weapons and environmental degradation.

What should I abuse you in return for supporting a movement that is encouraging social disorder, social chaos and disharmony through various methods one of them being freedom without any responsibility.
