Don’t throw yourself at man and indulge in promiscuity, protect your own body, purity, and chastity - This is the message Delhi High court has given to all those gullible women who are duped by men with the promise of marriage and enter into a physical relationship.
A woman had lodged a complain against one Arif Iqbal 22 saying that he promised to marry her so she entered in a physical relationship with him, but now he had gone back on his promise. Iqbal filed for anticipatory bail which the Delhi High Court granted and it also gave it observations that though it was wrong for the man both morally and ethically to exploit any woman by extending false promise or through devious acts to force or induce the girl for sexual relationship, it was also the duty of the girl to protect her modesty and purity.
In fact it was quite scathing in its remarks that a 23 year old girl was expected to be mature enough to understand the consequences of the act in case the accused went back on his promise. It also drew the inference that the sex act was consensual from the love letters the girl had allegedly written between 2007 and 2008 that she wanted to come close to Iqbal and even has his child.
As per Iqbal they had sex at the girl’s house after she had drugged her parents with tea laced with intoxicating pills. The Supreme Court has however totally different take on this matter holding that consent for sex obtained through false promise of marriage amounts to rape. It would be interesting to see where this observation will lead and what impact it will have on other such cases.
