Yes, this may be a possibility not in a distant future. British Scientist Professor Karim Nayernia of the Newcastle University where research is being done on stem cells trying to change them into other cells has succeeded in creating an artificial sperm with the help of cocktail of chemicals and vitamins from human stem cell.

When viewed through a microscope they have a head and tail just like a sperm and even swim like it and if permission is granted for further research Professor Karim is confident that these artificial sperms would be capable of fertilizing eggs and creating babies.

As British law forbids the use of artificial egg or sperm in fertility treatment the research needs legal permission to proceed further.

The original cells were taken from the embryos from the first day of their lives,but Professor wants to use skin from a male arm to develop artificial sperm.The cells than would be than would be exposed to a mixture that would take them back to their embryonic stage and than these would be used to create artificial sperm

Basically the research is being done to treat male infertility. if sperms can be created in lab by using just skin cells,that would bring revolution in the IVF treatment.Now any couple can have their own baby with their own cells.

As per the report ethically this is creating a furore.If artificial sperm can be created just by using skin cells of any male ,it could mean that even dead men could have babies.The killing of live embryoes for stem cell is also a big issue.

The social and psychological implications are too complicated at this stage. But if this breakthrough can create fertile sperms, there may research being done somewhere to create a female egg,will that mean that sometimes in future the role of male and female in creation of new life will be redundant?
