Students, No Vigilante Action Please-Australian Prime Minister

As the attacks on Indian students in Australia are increasing, they have started taking the matter of their safety in their own hands. They are forming groups to protect themselves from these attacks.

Obviously such actions throw a bad light on the capability of Australian Police who some how is unable to prevent these attacks.Prime Minister Kevin Rudd warned Indian Students against the vigilante action to prevent attacks against them.In fact he put the blame squarely on the violence in cities not only in Australia but all over the world. He said it is unacceptable for anyone to commit an act of violence against any student of any ethnicity anywhere in Australia. He refused to admit that attacks were not racist in nature.

But now there is a catch, apart from promising that strict hardliner measures will be taken against such attacks he noted that at least 20 Australians have either been murdered or assaulted in the last decade, thereby reminding us that Australians in India also run the risk of some violence at any given time.

He also said that students should report any act of violence to the police and if their complaints were not followed through they should go to the local MP,(isn’t it just like in India).

By the way as per him Australia was one of the safest countries in the world for international students and Australians have an inherent culture of tolerance.

In contrast Victorian Premier John Brumby and Police Chief Simon Overland visited the troubled western part of Melbourne and Overland was candid enough to admit that some of the attacks on Indian students were clearly racist in motivation and he promised Mounted Police, dog squads and helicopter patrols will be used to curb crime.
Politicians are same everywhere

It is unfortunate that as Australia grows with mulitculterism which has its good points it also brings in some people from angry, volitile and violent cultures who bring with them their wrong attitudes and their hatreds thus ruining our standards, our good will and everybody’s safety.

Lynne, you really think Australians are not racists??

Even the cricket players from Australia have proved their racist behavior lot of time...

Students/Indians in Australia for that many migrants have lapsed in the grasp of street language. You may be an oxford or Cambridge educated but the understanding of the 'lingo' is paramount and comes with time spent in the country. Interaction with intellectual university environment is not enough. So be advised to back off and let the Govt. and Police mull over this. Protest are illegal, and would be dealt with to clear the roads for ordinary citizens. So go to your studies diligently, complete with top grades and decide what you want to do. Getting involved in protest wont get you anywhere

I just happened to stumble upon this topic on internet and it seems passions are running high on both sides.personally it seems both sides are overreacting. calling all Aussies as racists is inappropriate, on the other side not acknowledging that there could be racism in Australia is equally ignorant. I have no personal experience of Australia so my information is limited to news clips and I don't want to assume anything. on the other hand where there is smoke there is fire, so something seems rotten underneath Australian society, which by simple denial will not help. Being a cricket Fan I don't believe Australian team or it's umpires behave in civilized manner. This is just my personal impression. sorry If causes offense.

No I don’t believe the majority of Australians are racist - I am not a cricket fan so I don’t know about their behaviour.
The ordinary average Australian person like myself gets on with most people from different cultures, I grew up in a migrant area, some of my dearest friends are of mixed nationalities.

One of my son’s is going out with an Indian girl at the moment and I am doing her girlfriends wedding flowers.

We really don’t care where you come from as long as if they come here to make it home then they accept our way of life.
I think its abhorant what is happening to the students, or to anyone who gets bashed and in the big cities it does happen, people have to be vigilant and be prepared to protect and defend them selves.
On the news it showed the problem as being between the Lebanese and the Indians.
Then of course the media like to hype it up all out of preportion.

Thanks for getting back Lynne!

Even i believe that majority cannot be racist or else Indians wouldn't have opted to study there at 1st place. These are the few nasty elements who are spoiling the name of the whole country.

Best wishes for your son's wedding :)

It's not a problem between Lebanese and Indian students. The continuing attacks on Indian students in Australia are racial.Where as there is question of protecting themselves, I think Australian government should protect them as they can't take law in to their hands.

1940s movie star Alan Ladd was very short and there were special platforms made, especially when women in same scene, that made him appear taller.

The immigration policy of our country changed in the mid 70’s after the Vietnam war and a change of government.
Before that our ties were very much still with Britain and our population was small so was our infrastructure.

In the 50’s and 60’s when I was growing up in a migrant area we had kids at school from everywhere Greece, Italy, Europe, Poland, Hungery even Russia to name a few.
We couldn’t just open the flood gates to everyone, and those migrants today who assimilated have proven to be a major contribution to our country.

Unfortunately some of the newer migrants arriving since the flood gates were open, refuse to assimilate, wont learn our language, exploit our services and system and bring their old prejudices, violence and hatred to wards the west with them.
Its not the colour of their skin but its the attitude and behaviour that ordinary australians take offence to.

What is your country’s history, attitude and policy towards immigrants or refugees?

how do you propose our government protect everyone - impossible. Can your government stop the crimes against different sects or women in India? No.

Self defense is NOT taking the law into your own hands, its called survival, and unfortuanately in our Cities now, one has to be aware and alert.
The footage I saw on T.V. WAS between Lebanese and Inians and I saw an Indian student saying but we have no quarrel with the Lebanese, but our media isn’t allowed to single out a specific group of people.

Because we are multiculteral we have now imported people who are racist or prejudiced against other nations, religions and cultures.
The ordinary average ”home grown” australian is not - because all our people’s heritage is mixed and diverse.

Unfortunately the newest immigrant groups to arrive in australia have to face the same hardships of making their way in a new land such as other immigrant groups like the Lebanese, Vietnamese and former soviet countries etc etc, the Indians are the next big major group of immigrants, and unfortunately, as newly arrived peoples they are targeted by some of the worser kinds of people you know like - manipulative people or exploiters or users.

Unlike naturalised immigrants from previous arrivals who wouldnt stand for any haughty intolerable behaviour from idiots (who are everywhere in the world unfortunately, maybe more here) as the new group some may find they experience these terrible injustices which is such a shame because there really is a nice multicultural society developing in our major cities, if i go on a dating site for example check for yourself www.rsvp.com.au which is australias largest dating site 1 million members you can see the multicultural delights of choice when searching for a partner its great for the gene pool, and for choice .....i can find spicy or milky or chocolate its so much better these days.I love the variety of people.

Its terrible that newcomers can get a bad experience I can give you a subtle example of the racism they may get as newcomers......- working at a grocery delivery depot, the new keen workers like the Indian guys will be given all the lousy delivery jobs the hard jobs because they are a newcomer. Wheras other people would complain and whine about the job some Indian guys would just do it.

So i understand that these things must be going on, and more must be done to ensure that their complaints can be taken seriously and can find advocates on their behalf to help with discriminatory treatment.

as well as maybe australian people need to reflect on some of their attitudes, and remember how good this country could become if we get more races to live here so that there is no such thing as racial majority or religious majority but a wonderful grand stew or hodge podge. Im greedy for my country to have all the genetic diversity like in countries like USA or Brazil.

Heres some more links

This issue is about various ethnic gangs - the maronite lebanese gangs who attack indians last time, also there are fights between aboriginal and lebanese gangs and also white gangs so it is a very complex issues of young racist men getting out and behaving like hoodlums in front of each other.
