Not the First Shoe nor the Last

Once again it is the humble shoe which is in the center of controversy. By now everyone knows that our esteemed Home minister was gifted a shoe albeit bit forcefully which slithered down on the floor.

Jarnail Singh a veteran journalist could not control his anger at the injustice meted out to the victims of the 1984 riots hurled a sports shoe at him but the time, the occasion and above all, the way was wrong which afterward Jarnail himself admitted.

It seems that shoe hurling is becoming a revolt statement. Last week it was Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao who had a battered sports shoe thrown at him. It was a miss, than it was the turn of Israel’s ambassador to Sweden to become the next face at the shoe throwing contest.

After Bush it seems every politician can be the target. The common factor is every politician who had a shoe thrown at him ducked at the right moment thereby saving his face and dignity. In fact the shocked look on Chidambaram’s face is on every news channel. Whereas, there was an amused look on both the Chinese and the former USA President’s face!

One thing which is gaining importance over the whole issue is its politicizing. Different political parties have jumped into the fray claiming close relations with Jarnail whose action was a spur of the moment act and these parties are trying to gain political mileage in view of the oncoming elections. Pity!

Yes, it’s neither the first shoe nor the last to be thrown on politicians. The political parties will keep on fielding the candidates like Jadish Tytler and leaders of parties will keep on receiving the shoe. Why Modi has not received yet?

I don't make it out why the educated fraternity as great as the journalists are behaving like this. the string that started from Bush seems to start the shoe culture. days are not far when the journalists and all the ppl attending the press conference will not be allowed to wear the shoes! This is not the right way! Don't replace pen with shoe.

Exactly! I totally support your words. If a journalist cannot control his emotions, he should resign from his position first, then arm himself with shoes to do what he was unable to do with a pen.

I sympathize with such journalists who are unable to stand the pressure, especially of emotional nature. It gives an idea that the profession was dumped on his shoulders. Pity!

This is the 1st time that any Indian politician has been thrown upon a shoe by a journalist but otherwise they are well experienced.

We all know its their favorite past time to throw shoes at each other during the parliament sessions.

Bush received the shoe from an Iraqi. No American can do like this.

But Indians don’t care about the respect of their honorable leaders.

After 9/11, Bush took the lesson and did not let happen a single attack on the US. You people are guaranteed security and justice by your leaders.

Here the case is opposite. Any Indian can be killed anytime under a terrorist attack anywhere on the street inspite of so many attack. Think about it, its serious. But our leaders do not take it seriously because they and their families are secure in the hands of commandoes.

They deserve the treatment that they get. ITs high time and we need people in politics who are serious about their jobs.

I see the shoe throwing as an equivalent to the frustration of being told, ”Let them eat cake!”

Shoe today, guillotine tomorrow? The world leaders should take it as a warning.

I have to agree with Milind and Aneez, it is a rather low rent thing for professionals to do.

I have a feeling that this is just the beginning, along with the demonstrations and burning of effigies.

CBI did a very bad thing. We are in our 25th year in search of justice.

The sikhs are and will always be regarded as the most courageous Indians. What this journalist has done is what we all want to do but never had the guts to carry out that. It really doesnt matter whether it is a civilized way of protest or not. There will be a time when the politicians will really be embarrassed to face the public. This is certainly the beginning.

The act of journalist can not be justified. However it points out to the disconnect between politicians and citizens. Leave aside the technical and legal aspects...Fact of the matter is that massacre of thousands of innocent sikhs was committed with political patranoge. What is the compulsion to give tickets to these tainted politicians...Society will be much better if they remain out of parliament..

Garima,
What is the temperature now in Nagpur, may be 40C.
Some riots are instantaneous. Are not Maharashtrian Brahmins targetted while Gandhijee was assasinated. Muslims were targetted at Godhra. Mr.Chidambaram said that he has pardoned him. Law takes its own course.
There is nothing to feel happy about it.

Jarnail Singh,(not journal singh fortunately) too an hasty decision but it was not furtive. It has to be condemned in strong words. He job is to write whatever is in anguish.
The cult of shoe tossing has become quite normal. There must be a ban on shoes while the VIPs are interviewed in closets.

I am not really in favor of throwing shoes. Having said that, this is a democracy and every citizen has the right to answers and what Mr. Jarnail did is purely out of frustration. Sikhs have been patient for 25 years and now its time that we see some justice happening. Wake up Mr. C, you have to face and address questions. If not today, then when... how long do we have to wait and be patient??

Throwing shoe is not a solution. It may reflect the anger but does not really penalize the culprits. Why people like Jarnail Singh don’t involve themselves in politics. Why the Congress gets the votes of Sikhs?
