No one to carry candle for Soumya Vishwanathan in Honour Ceremony in Sweden
We may condemn verbally only the murder of TV journalist Somaya Vishwanathan when she was returning home late in night after work. She was working with headlines Today and before that she was with CNN.

She had stayed late in the office to cover the news of blasts of Malegaon and Modassa. She was shot dead on 30th September and police is yet to make a headway in her case.

She was honoured by PROFOCA The memorial is instituted by Professional Foreign Correspondents Association honour all the foreign correspondents who have lost their lives in the lines of their duty.It was the seventh year It started in 2002

It was an eumenical service where the cathedral rendered choiciest classical music with a prayer for univeral peace was offered.Than there was a candle ceremony where the representative of the country of each slain correspondent lighted a candle and carried it to the main table to place it with all the other candles as the names were called out.

There were six slain Indian journalists honoured by the Association.Mohammad Muslimuddin Assamese pratidin,Ashok Sodhi Photographer Daily Execelsier Jammu,V.P.Chouhan a senior journalist,Komal Yadav a photographer,Amar Ujala, Javed Mir Local kashmiri paper and Soumaya.

There was no representative from Indian Embassy to carry the candle for these six brave journalists who laid down their lives in their line of duty.

As per the Association Founder Jose Luis Belmar , invitations to the Indian Embassy were sent well in advance. He lamented the fact tht despite India being the largest democracy with free press for the second consecutive year chose to ignore the honour ceremony which honours the seeker of truth. It does not involve any political or materialistic gains.

IANS was deputed to perform the candle ceremony for its slain Indian colleagues.

Is any one really concerned about the slain journalists or it is just lip service?.

I think the authorities in Sweden didn't know that the Indian governing authorities do not do anything without their self interest(bribe). I think in this case they knew they would not gain anything by being present there so they simply ignored the invitation. Sick...Could have showed a little curtsy towards the poor girl.

Hi,Shweta, Thanks for the visit, actually it is not right for us common people to expect anything from the authorities concerned, they have got so many responsibilities that they do not pay any attention to such small functions.

Its really sad when media do not get any respect in a democratic country like India. This is simply a case of ignorance on the part of Indian authorities that they didn't even bother to send single representative to Sweden.

Hi Dane, Thanks for the visit. It is sad but not unexpected,it is not ignorance but sheer indifference on the part of Indian Embassy in Sweden

Oh! Which means that they ignored the ceremony twice because there were no political or materialistic gains by being present there. The girl deserved a little curtsy from her nation. This is not expected out of the countries with free press.

Hi Walled, Thanks for the visit you are right this was not the first time they had ignored the ceremony, clearly showing that where there is no gain of any sort they are not ready to ”waste’ their precious time.
