It had to happen, some day or other,I am glad the day has come when one of our states with deeply rooted cultural and traditional ties, where even today women has to cover her face when going out, where ‘KHAPS’ i.e. the Caste Panchayat’s word is final, where even today Honour Killings take place, yes our very own medieval Haryana is rueing the fast diminishing number of girls in it.
Where Female Foeticide was a matter of routine because of a fiercely male dominated Jat Society, it has led to a skewed sex ratio.
“Female Foeticide is a curse” now say Pawanjit Banawala who is the head of the Akhil Bhartiya Adarsh Jat Mahasabha. He is the man responsible for many controversial Khap decisions, the most infamous being that a girl and boy sharing the same sub caste cannot marry and if they do so they will have to face dire consequences.
Before you jump to a conclusion that perhaps this ruling is due to newly discovered love for females you can think again. Now they are opposing female foeticide because the males are unable to find local brides for themselves. They have to go out of their community mostly to poorer Eastern and Southern regions, bringing in girls after paying a hefty amount to the girls’ parents who dress in their brightly coloured sarees instead tradtional ghagra-choli. Even their food habits are different with rice and sambhar instead of saag and bajra rotis.
Now the self styled gaurdians of Haryanvi culture and morality are feeling threatened because these outsider brides atleast five in each village are threatening the purity of local cultures and customs.
In fact there is a proposal for the marrying couples . Instead of seven vows they have to take the eighth vow, they have to promise never to kill a girl child.

Don't be in illusion that leaders like Pawanjit Banawala has changed their attitude towards women/girl. Don't think that they have changed their stand on castism. They are still suffering from the feudal thoughts.
