Married at 8, Divorced at 10: Glamor magazine's 'Woman of The Year'

This is the story of Nujood Mohammad Ali, a Yemini child bride who was married against her wish, through arranged marriage to a man three times her age has been honored by the Glamor magazine, with their annual “Woman of The Year”award. She is one of the nine women among whom are Hillary Clinton, Mrs. Rice, Nicole Kidman.

The magazine gives the award to women in various fields be it politics, entertainment, fashion etc. Hillary was awarded for motivating women from every sphere, Rice for her political role. Tyra Banks for contribution to the charity supporting young women and Chanel chief Maureen for her role in international business world. Nicole Kidman for her work among abused women.

But the story of Nujood is unique. She was married to a man three times her age but never reconciled to her fate. When she came to visit her parents after two months, she ran off to a court to seek divorce. When the judge saw her sitting on the bench after the session was over, he came to know about her plight. A Human Rights Lawyer took up her case and Nujood got what she wanted, her Freedom.

Naturally she is stronger both mentally and physically. Now she is studying further, two benefactors have agreed to pay for her school supply and further education.

Now as per Nujood her life is as sweet as candy. Our sincere wishes are the same “May your life be always as sweet as candy”.

Sickening.

Marrying children. What is WRONG with some cultures for christ’s sake??!!

(The religious reference is deliberate).

I read lots of criticism, here and elsewhere, of my (Western) culture, but, despite it’s faults, at least legalised pedophilia is not one of them.

Disgusting, depraved, and all in the name of......

Words fail me.

Hi, MIchael, thanks for the visit. It is the act of the depraved and some cultures permit it because the powerful have vested interest in continuing such practises.

Both parents and the so-called mature person who married her should be thrown in jail for a very very long time.

you do have a point here Veena, but starting to take legal action against such people could be a start to end such CRIMINAL acts...
I honestly cannot believe how a grown man can think of an 8-year-old as a wife... this is sick...
thanks for the article anyway, its good to know that something like this is actually happening in our world...

Peace

Hi!!

you’re right Veena, jail won’t stop it all, and the courage of individual children IS an example to other children, but Wa’d is right too.

The use of legal punishment of this perversion would show to the young girls concerned that they are not fighting alone.

They need all the legal and moral help and encouragement possible to help them take the plunge and take on the system.

Because then they will at least know that the law will help them.

They are children. They need ALL our help.

Seeya!!
