I am confused regarding Kandhamal

Shocking, obviously when one is supposed to side with poor Christians whose houses are being destroyed and they are forced to flee their homes taking shelter in the forests, of course they are being ill treated to the extreme and it should be condemned as I would condemn this type of treatment given to anyone.

But if I am forced to take sides instead of blindly siding with the victims I would like to know the actual problem, so there, it all started as ethnic clashes between the Kandha tribe and the Pano tribe.

It seems that in the beginning Kandhas were at a slightly higher level then the Panos but both tribes lived in abject poverty. Kandas being 52 per cent and Panos being 30per cent out of which nearly 70 per cent now are Christians with the arrival of the missionaries, the Panos with the sole purpose of improving their lot converted into Christians, getting the benefit of education and raising their standard of living.

After getting educated they realized the benefits of being a scheduled caste so they want that benefit also, which is resented by the Kandhas.

This is what being sold to the world, I don’t know the actual facts but one thing is for sure all the political parties are out there making hay and ensuring that the fire are kept burning, after all it will election time soon.

Mr.L.K.Advani along with Ms. Sushma Swaraj met with the Church delegation on October 8 and after 38 days condemned the violence in Orissa. No problem, better late than never, the meeting was also attended by BJP leader Kulkarni and Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra.

Interestingly the meeting was through the efforts of Swami Chidanand of Paramarth Niketan ,Rishikesh, who have business interests in US,Canada,Thailand and Singapore.

When the meeting was over Mr. Advani gifted everyone a copy of his book “My country My Life” and Swamiji gifted his book “Peace-For us, for our families, for our communities and for the world”.

There is a cry to ban the Bajrang Dal but first why not punish those who were responsible to maintain law and order in the area. The things went out of hand because the mob knew that they have been given free hand and there will be no punishment in the offing even if they burn anyone alive, so they did so.

Everyone is wrong and everyone is right and I am confused.

”even if they burn anyone alive, so they did so.
Everyone is wrong and everyone is right and I am confused”.

So am I. Very saddened too. But glad to learn. This is a splendid post that everyone should read.

Thank you Veena. Thank you very much...

Ms Veena,

Your post reflects unsaid sentiments of millions who are also confused because of many conflicting accounts of the problem. The issue of conversions or rsistance to them can be fought on any social forum by legitimate and non-violent means.

However, there is no confusion over this-

”but first why not punish those who were responsible to maintain law and order in the area. The things went out of hand because the mob knew that they have been given free hand and there will be no punishment in the offing even if they burn anyone alive, so they did so.”

Clearly, the hoodlums could not have vandalized the area this way without the tacit support of law-enforcers.

Mahesh, I completely and totally agree with you on the point that without tacit support no vandalisation is possible not only in Orissa but everywhere. So why not take an action against them first and I am sure we will see an improvement in the situation

I have said my say on your previous articles on the subject. You have projected the points well. Still you are bent upon going with your heart instead of hard-headed solutions. That is your wish.

Ban or no ban; our state law enforcement agencies are totally incapable of safe guarding us any where in the country, be it Delhi, Mumbai or any other place. In Kandhamal it is real Jungle-raj.

Rameshji, the whole thing is that news from Orissa is coming out in bits and pieces. So if I base my article on one news on day one tne scenario will be changed on day 2 and so on and so forth,But if I did not comment on the latest development I feel I would not be doing justice to the whole issue hence so many articles on the same.
And yes I agree with you in totality that if local police does its work honestly many Khandmal can be avoided.

Policeman and honest? Where are you my dear lady, not in India; I suppose?

There are no honest policemen in India.

I would like to share a small experience. 2-3 years back I had gone to Maharashtra Human Rights Commission office in Mumbai and was trying to figure my way out when I met the lady principal of Siddharth Law College. She told me that the members of law commission are up for sale, Abu Salem gets relief in 24 hours flat and you may have to wait for 3 to 5 years for your petition to come up for listing. She suggested to me to go and approach Additional Director General of Police of the state dealing with the department of Protection of Civil Rights at police headquarters. To my disbelief she added that the additional D.G.P. is honest. She further added that they are honest for 2 reasons; one, they have earned so much that they have no other alternative than to remain honest and second that even if I wish I can’t bribe them because whatever I bribe may be too less for them. So, they prefer not to get exposed and remain honest policemaen. But then, that is only at the D.G.P. level. Lower rungs are thoroghly corrupt, inefficient and incompetent. In Bihar people pay the local goon for safety rather than trusting a policeman. In Mumbai they trusted Shiv Sena...but on that later, at some other place, at some other time.
