High Jump Silver Medal Winner Falls To Prostitution

Six years ago every thing was going according to the plan. Nisha, who represented Assam in National Athletics in Pune in 1998 and had worked hard, won the silver medal in high jump in the national level athletics meet in Pune. Obviously she was on cloud nine.

Her love life was also going great. She had found her soul mate, Sunil Shetty who represented Assam in football and married him against her family wishes.

But the dream run ended here, she became mother of a girl child in 2004 but by that time Sunil was so frustrated because despite being assured of a government job he was constantly overlooked and was unable to land a job. He took to drinking and suffered from depression and unfortunately lost his life in February 2007.

Poor Nisha was left all alone and she had to look after her daughter also, unable to get a decent job she took to prostitution and was arrested on Saturday in Raipur, Chattisgarh.

The tragedy being that a court granted her bail on a surety of Rs 10000/- but as she was unable to pay she is still languishing in the jail.

The local sports authority is expressing verbal sympathy. They are planning to do the least for her that is arrange for securing bail, when that will happen no one knows allowing delay for the red tapism.

Isn’t it ironic when we read about crores of rupees which are paid as contract amount to cricketers it seems every other sport suffers and is neglected.

It is really shameful that anyone woman has to stoop to selling herself just to fend for herself and her family.

It's the sorry state of affairs in India that the players who did well for country or state have to suffer. How can we expect from the people to choose sports as a career when they have to face such situations?

It's happening without proper sports policy in the country. The government has no plan to attract the people towards the sports. It has nothing to do with the future security of the players. It's just cricket which gets the government's due attention. All other sports and sports persons are being deliberately neglected by the government.

Come on! Don’t forget we live in India. It only happens in India that a budding sportstar has to take up prostitution to survive while the government is busy granting millions to dumb politicos like Mayawati to erect stupid statues.
