Girl commits suicide for not being allowed to Study Further

In this age of women’s emancipation, why is there always a discordant note, like the suicide of 15 yr old girl for not being allowed to study further.

Meenu Kumari commmited suicide by hanging herself in her house in North West Delhi. She had recently shifted from Bihar and was staying here with her parents and elder brother.

It seems that she was studying back in Bihar in a Govt. school, but when she came to Delhi her father apparently forced her to leave studies and do house work.

Even though she was not an outstanding student the poor girl was fond of studies and desperately wanted to go to school like her brother who is studying in 12th standard. She used to have arguments with her father on this issue and when thwarted time and again she took the ultimate step of killing herself.

The most frustrating part is that in Government schools about 900 in Delhi provide free education, meals, books and uniform especially to girl child. There is absolutely no burden on the parents, they simply have to ensure that their wards attend school regularly. The school takes care of everything, even taking the students out for educational trips free of cost.

So much is being done to promote education but such incidents just prove that we still have a long way to go. It is necessary to bring awareness and enlightenment in the minds of the parents about the role and importance of education for girls also, then only we will take a step forward to usher in total development

This is the sad story of a poor girl and reveals the bias in Indian society. I wonder when the society here will put girls on equal footing with boys.

This proves that ”India Shining” is nothing more than a myth - a fable that will perhaps take more than a century to put the diabolic mentality to an end.

Even after a century it’ll end, well, frankly speaking, I doubt. Because Indians have the psyche of toeing the old shibboleths. Before we talk about the women’s emancipation, we need to change our mentality and put those diabolic notions in the bin forever.

Thanks for reading and commenting. Yes I agree with you the prime need is to change our mindset then there will be be no need for special status for women.

What can I say. This is tragic. Unfortunately it’s not the last case. Far from it..

This happens here in Europe too, where women’s emancipation has made more progress than in many parts of the world, it has always happened, and always will.

You see, the emancipation of women, although being, obviously, something we all want, leads to it’s own problems and suicides, due to female students being put under, and putting themselves under, more and more pressure to ”succeed”.

There are no easy answers here, I’m afraid.

I feel so sorry for her family..

Thanks Michael for the visit.I know there are no easy answers but when the father did not have to lift a finger to educate the poor girl why did he not send her to school is something which is incomprehensible. The mindset needs to be changed and fast

Incomprehensible. I couldn’t agree more Veena. May I wish all those who fight for children’s and women’s rights all the success in India.

(Mind you, the fight is not over here in Europe either...)

Seeya!
