Cost Of One Egg - Strippping, Whipping and Tonsuring

What does one egg cost in TT Market, Mumbai maximum Rs 3, but for vivek 10 years old it cost him his clothes, his hair and got a whipping in bonus, besides being scalded by hot tea.

Vivek from UP came to Mumbai three months ago with his ailing mother, where his father is working. After his mother’s treatment they were supposed to return back to their village in August. They are putting up in Mhada building near Elphinstone road.

On Friday Vivek was playing and he reached TT market, there as he was feeling hungry he took one egg but the shopkeeper Prashant Sheyte caught him in the act.

Then all the hell broke loose, he pulled Vivek inside the shop, tore his clothes, kicked him and threw hot tea at him, still not satisfied he called the barber and tonsured off half the hair of Vivek’s head.

Totally flabbergasted and in a state of shock and without a stitch on his body Vivek was sitting on the pavement crying his heart out, a good samaritan Nitin Chavan came by, after listening to the horrifying tale, he took Vivek to the Bhoiwiada Police station where a complaint was lodged against the shopkeeper and was arrested from his house, as per him Vivek was trying to steal his cell phone while Vivek is denying the allegation saying as he was hungry he took one egg.

Sheyte was released on bail on Saturday. The truth will come out in further inquiry, but whatever may be the truth it does not justify the treatment he meted out to the poor kid. It just shows that the tolerance level is touching ground zero and what is disturbing truth is that people take out all their frustrations on someone who is weaker than them, if some gang member had taken the cell phone, the shopkeeper would have given it to him with all his good wishes along with the money and full filled any other demand quite willingly.

He would have never even dared to raise his hand leave aside his kick against him.

This is inhumane behavior. The shopkeeper should be punished.

Every one knows that this is inhumane. The question is why is it happening so in India even after more than sixty years of independence. Why are they not able to curb the poverty and hunger?

You call this to take out the frustration! Why don't they do so with their own children. That will be much better way to take out the frustration.

no child should be touched, be it their own, or a child of the poor. frustrations are the personal problem of the adults which they should learn to deal with.

No doubt, the shopkeeper over reacted, but the child was also guilty. Theft cannot be justified, no matter what.

I think the shop keeper over-reacted,may be he was frustrated at some thing he took out all his frustrations on one defenceless kid.Yes what the boy did was wrong but he did not deserve such inhumane punishment

It's the problem with us. We always search for excuses. you are calling this just an over reaction! No it's not so. It's the reality and so many children face such situation daily. Should we think that in fact the shop keeper had no such intention of beating the child and it was just by chance. Try to accept the reality.

No doubt the boy did wrong...theft can’t be justifiedand it is elders’ duty to correct him...make him understand that theft is a crime....
another point to notice if small kids like Vivek stole a chocolate or cake I would sure that it is hunger that drove him to steal..but he can’t eat egg after stealing..he has to cook it.
It is shame for our society that many parents do not teach moral values to their children in young age.
But beating the boy like this only proved how cruel the shopkeeper was...
