Ten patients underwent cataract surgery at Bollineni Global Eye Foundation Hospital in Nellore town on October 19. In all 34 underwent eye surgery since the camp started on Oct 18.
But something went horribly wrong and the patients started having pain in the eyes especially the Nellore patients. Poor things went to the Doctors where their worst fears were confirmed when the Doctor’s had to remove the eyeballs because they were badly infected and if they were not removed they could have caused more harm and could have become life threatening. Their eyeballs were removed on 23rd October
The Doctors are blaming the saline contamination during the post operative care where as authorities are blaming the solutions used during the surgery itself. The rest of the six patients are also under medical supervision.
Sai Murali, MD of Bollineni eye hospital told TOI even those whose eyeballs were removed could see with one eye. This was an unfortunate incident and the causes for the infection were beyond our control,” he said, claiming that 45,000 cataract surgeries have been performed in the hospital in the past six years.
It is really immaterial that inquiry will be held and blame will be fixed on the guilty, the four unfortunate persons have lost one eye forever, no inquiry could give them back their most precious thing, their eye.
The MD’s contention that those whose one eyeball was removed can see with one eye is horribly insensitive statement. Wonder if he would say the same thing if God forbid something goes wrong during his operation.
