Last October Joseph Philips only 15 year old, entered the ground floor house of Kathleen Hutchings, a 83 old pensioner and a great grandmother in UK with the purpose of stealing. She was bed ridden because of her painful Arthritis.
When she called out Joseph entered her bedroom and started beating the defenceless woman with her own walking stick. She was left badly injured with a broken wrist and a shattered eye socket. Worse the juvenile tormentor even put the telephone out of her reach so that she could not even dial 999 for help.
The reason for such barbarous act was a very simple one. Joseph just wanted to know what would it feel like to kill someone. He was angry and heard voices in his head to do something.
The result of such inhuman beating left the once independent and spirited woman shattered not only physically as she had to spend three month in hospital for medical treatment and lost her eye, but mentally also, because now she is a disoriented and forced to live in care. She has now shifted to a residential house where she has round the clock care.
By his action Joseph took away the freedom of Kathleen. For this heinous crime the Judge Graham Hume took away the anonymity granted to juvenile criminals and made his name public.
Philip’s lawyer Patrick Mason said that the attack was indefensible and did not offer any mitigation. To batter a bedridden, defenseless, old woman just for fun cannot be condoned under any circumstance.
