Another Stampede - Another TragedyIt was only in August 2008 that 145 devotees lost their lives and many were injured while visiting the Naina Devi Temple in Bilaspur,HP
Today at 5.30am nearly 184 devotees lost their lives while visiting Chamunda Mandir at Jodhpur and many more were injured. They had gone there on the occasion of Navaratra. The stampede started beause of a rumour of bomb. The death toll may rise as per the Police Authorities. The number of the devotees was very high nearly 20,000 and could not be handled properly. The pathway was narrow and was slippery due to recent rains.
Ater each such tragedy there are reports which have a common refrain, the local authorities were not prepared, the arrangements for safe passage for the devotees were not properly maintained.
It is a common knowledge that the number of devotees is increasing year by year, the donation is also increasing in the same proportion,at least some of the money can be used to safegaurd the lives of devotees. Loss of live due to mismanagement is also a kind of homicide.

Such stampedes routinely happen during the Haj pilgrimage. As long as people blinded by faith and superstition would continue to make such dangerous pilgrimages, they will continue to perish like insects.

It is the responsibility of the local management to take proper measures for the safety of devotees, invariably they fail

What's the death toll now? Last heard, it was something like 185 dead and 300 injured. These figures are mindbogglingly insane. Yet, this shows that no matter whatever the past lessons were, we shall keep on dying like this.

The image is a very powerful one. I watched the footage on television where the girl was crying and asking his father to wake up. Haunting images really. I wonder when will people wake up and do something to avoid such tragedies.

There are an estimated 20,000 female sex slaves forced into prostitution in Tel-Aviv each year... between 10,000 and 15,000 women had been smuggled into Israel over the previous four years to work as prostitutes.
This is an amazing number if you took the small size and population of Israel.

When the official death toll is near 200 we can presume safely that at least 500 people died in the stampede. There are reports that over a dozen people from the same neighbourhood died in the incident today.

Temples without proper safety measures in place should be shut down to pilgrims immediately to avoid such tragedies. It doesn't matter if this move hurts the religious sentiments of people. Human life is more precious than any faith.

Shocking to see such things happening in Third World countries. There are many popular pilgrimages in Italy as well where millions visit every year. But we have never seen anything on this scale ever. I can't remember any.

The pilgrimages in Vatican are sprawled over a large area and well planned and managed properly,These are the reasons that such accidents do not take place there

Goddess Chamunda Devi is the family deity of the ex-Maharaja of Jodhpur and her temple is located at the fort. Thousands of piligrims throng there early morning at each Navratri for early morning Aarti. The stampede occured at around 5.30 a.m. and the victims were mostly young boys aged 13 to 19 years.

As the temple is located in the fort itself ,the pathway is narrow and with nearly 20,000 people in a limited space caused this tragedy
