This is the feeling World record Holder marksman Ronjan Sodhi has. As per him the Olympic Gold has done wonders for Abhinav but failed to improve the plight of shooting as a sport in India.
Ordinary shooters still have to beg and borrow for cartridges and guns.
He was practicing for the National Shooting Championship in Jagatpura. The double trap marksman missed the wild card entry to Olympics by just a whisker. He has also equaled the world record twice in the ISSF world cup at Belgrade in Serbia in June.
Very candidly he voiced his view that public memory is too short to retain the glory of Olympic gold. Abhinav’s historic feat of winning the first individual Olympic gold will also be forgotten soon.
He also criticized the laxity of officials responsible for providing better facilities and better utilization of facilities available as they were not doing their jobs. In fact the world class shooting range at Jagatpura has unlocked for the shooters only recently. All the ranges should have guns and pellets for upcoming shooters to broaden the base of shooting in country. The facilities are not being utilized properly.
He was all praises for NRAI for a least doing something in the right direction. First it was hard to import gun and pellets but now once a shooter achieve certain score he can easily import airguns and pellets.
Ronjan is at present being coached by renowned Australian Mark Russel the former guide of Rajyavarhan Singh a silver medal winner in the Athens Olympics, but he wants an Italian coach because they are the best.
When we are not providing the best facilities to our sportsmen do we have any right to criticize them if they return empty handed from any world class tournament?
