Jagseer Singh, a resident of Tallewal village Punjab is hail and hearty and in fact is fighting property cases left and right even with his own family. In fact he was involved in so many criminal activities that he changed his identity from Jagseer Singh to Baldev Singh in 1996.

He was involved in a property dispute way back in 1990’s with other villagers Nachattar Singh, his son Sheera Singh and others Surjit Singh, Nikka Singh and Amarjeet Singh. They had come to blows over a property dispute. Than Jagseer Singh alias Baldev Singh went missing and his father accused the five of kidnapping and murdering his son. The case was registered in June 1996 and the five were convicted by sessions court in July 1998.

Five innocent people went to jail for allegedly murdering a person who was in fact very much alive and kicking. Sheera Singh was unable to bear the humiliation and committed suicide five years later.

This issue came to light on 21st Dec 2008 when a Chandigarh based newspaper reported that four men were behind bars for murdering Jagseer Singh who in fact was arrested on Dec 9th on charges of cheating.

Luckily NHRC took sou motto notice of the case and finally asked the Punjab Police and State Chief Secretary to submit its report. Than the whole matter came to light. Five innocent persons had to spend 11 years of their lives behind bars for a murder they did not commit, one of them lost his life due to the humiliation.

On the intervention of NHRC the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Punjab Government to pay the victims Rs 1 crore in damages and to help them start afresh. Meanwhile criminal proceedings have been initiated against those responsible for framing them.

The NHRC which had to face severe criticism for its allegedly biased report of the Batla House encounter has got it right this time. But what about Nachattar Singh he lost his son Sheera Singh for no fault of his. In his case it is True “Justice Delayed is Justice Denied”.
