10 year Old Girls' Marriage Is Justified

As per the Bureau report, The Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz al-Shiekh, the most powerful and senior cleric of Saudi Arabia said, the marriage of 10 year old girls is justified by the Islamic Sharia Law. He said this in a speech last Monday reported by the local media.

He was reacting to the news in the media against the marriage of the minors, but he said Islamic Sharia is not against the women and is not unjust for them. The law allows pre-teen marriages and the critics who are protesting against it are doing an injustice to the girls.

He justified the law saying that it was said that it was not wrong to get girls married below the age of 15, even the girls of 10 or 12 years can be married, they are not too young. He was speaking in view of the outcry made by media upon some well publicised marriages of young girls married to men old enough to be their great grand fathers.

On Monday, a courageous mother who had petitioned against the marriage of her 11 year old daughter to a 75 year old man, managed to get her daughter divorced by a court in Taif. Her husband had married her off in exchange for dowry.

But in December a Saudi Court in Unayzah 220km north of Riyadh had refused to grant divorce to a 8 year old girl married to a 58 year old man in exchange of dowry saying the case should wait till the girl reaches puberty.

Human rights groups are fighting against this tradition of marrying girls at such a young age to old men and fighting to establish a certain minimum legal age for women to be married.

Also, the references are given beside every verse, or at the bottom.

Whatever may be written in the context of the 7th century, why should that be implemented today? It’s okay if it is written, but don’t things have to change with time.

This is doing harm to their own people.

Another case illustrating the lust of Muslim men and well guarded by their Mufti. Wow! How can this idiot Mufti talk of women’s rights when in action he puts legality to the marriage of a minor who can’t distinguish between her left and right hand to men who have lived their life in sexual hunger?

Because he probably will take on a 12 year old himself.

This is so sad and pathetic, but not surprising at all.

Where’s Hassan? He probably supports the Grand Mufti.

I’m sure he does, as do the other 3 of the 4 muskateers.

Seems that the mufti is living in stone age to make a statement like this.

Depicts a very sad state. let us hope that people don’t take his word too seriously.

As per Amaya the cleric would have be right in the 7th century but he absolutely out of context in today’s world. He and others who think that they will influence people as per their own way of interpretation of the Holy Word, is doing a great disservice not only to the women but also the mankind.

That’s the problem.  Islam needs to adapt to the 21st century.  It has a long way to go.

Whatever the mufti has said or decreed is not in accordance with the true teaching of Islam. I can see more of his personal interest into it than that of Islam. The mufti is infact defaming Islam. In fact, Islam preserves the rights of every individual.
